Zsolt Lengyel

Zsolt Lengyel is an economist, a veteran of climate policy and a specialist in the relevant tools, policies and measures, including MRV aspects. He has been a member of verico SCE since its inception in 2013. Since its inception in 2015, he has served as Chair of the Institute for European Energy and Climate Policy(IEECP). At IEECP, he leads a key component on the global Horizon 2020 LC-CLA-01-2018 “Supporting Climate Policy Development.” He is a research associate at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Climate Change (IC3) at Waterloo University, Ontario, Canada.

From July 2013 to April 2017, he was the team leader and key expert of the European Commission’s Clima East project with a budget of 8.2 million euros over a four-year period. Under this project, he supported the development of INDCs in 2014-15 for various developing and Annex I countries, focusing on both mitigation and adaptation components, and then supported the implementation of the respective NDCs. Previously, he worked as Head of Climate Services and Lead Auditor for SQS (Swiss Association for Quality and Management Systems), a UNFCCC accredited DOE for CDM and AIE for JI in 2010-2013. He was one of the most experienced PoA auditors in the world (10 PoAs validated as lead auditor) and has been involved with a variety of CDM, VER, Gold Standard and JI projects. Prior to his audit work, he was a program advisor at the Dutch Carboncredits Initiative (ERUPT) for five years from 2005 to 2010. The area of responsibility included both the purchase of new carbon credits (CERUPT, ERUPT 5, ERUPT New Style) and the management of an approximately EUR 60 million project portfolio, as well as active participation in methodological work under the UNFCCC. Prior to joining the Dutch government, he worked for Vertis Environmental Finance and Chantrey Vellacott DFK in various European countries on their first contracted greenhouse gas emission reduction projects. After, he worked in environmental consulting for more than 20 years since joining the London School of Economics’ Environment and Geography Department in 1995. His responsibilities focused on technical advisory functions for projects related to climate change mitigation and adaptation, energy, and related policies & measures (MRV, CDM, JI, GIS, energy efficiency, renewable energy, adaptation) for clients such as Shell Global Solutions, Delphi Automotive Systems, Owens-Illinois, the World Bank, and the European Commission.
